Chennai, May 15 (PTI) A fire broke out at a storage facility belonging to a prominent IT firm on the Rajiv Gandhi Road here on Friday, triggering the emergency evacuation of employees, police said.
The blaze started around 3 pm at the godown in Karapakkam, near Sholinganallur. Police officials stated that the fire was sparked by ongoing welding work on the premises. A stray spark from the welding equipment reportedly ignited old computers, monitors, and plastic waste stored in the facility, causing flames to spread rapidly.
Thick black smoke billowed from the site, visible for several kilometres, causing panic among commuters and residents in the IT corridor.
“Employees were safely evacuated. No casualties or injuries have been reported so far,” a police official told PTI.
The fire has been largely brought under control, and cooling operations are currently underway. PTI JR JR ADB
