Kottayam (Kerala), Jul 13 (PTI) When people approach the Kerala Women’s Commission with complaints of neglect or harassment by their children or spouses, the problem is not always what it first appears to be.

A growing number of such cases are linked to poor mental health, a factor that is quietly affecting family relationships and widening misunderstandings within households, according to commission member Indira Ravindran.

Speaking after a district-level adalat held at the Kottayam Collectorate Conference Hall, Ravindran said the commission had been noticing an increase in complaints in which mental health appeared to play an important role.

She said some people approach the commission alleging that they have been neglected or ill-treated by their children or partners.

However, during the course of the inquiry, respondents in some of these cases have been able to produce evidence showing that the allegations were not supported by facts, Ravindran was quoted as saying in a release issued here.

The trend, she said, points to a larger need for awareness rather than confrontation.

“Mental health is the main theme of the seminars being organised by the Women’s Commission this year,” she said.

The commission is planning seminars and workshops at both the district and local levels to promote a better understanding of mental health and its impact on families.

She expressed concern over a rise in complaints related to excessive alcohol consumption and extramarital relationships, saying these issues were increasingly finding their way into cases brought before the commission.

At the Kottayam adalat, the commission considered 41 cases. Seven were settled, while 29 were adjourned to the next sitting. Four fresh complaints were received, and in one case, the commission sought a report from the commissioner, the release said. PTI TGB SSK
