Mumbai, Jun 20 (PTI) The Maharashtra Cyber Police has registered a case against multiple social media handles, including X accounts, for allegedly circulating offensive and defamatory content targeting state minister Girish Mahajan, officials said on Saturday.

The First Information Report was registered under sections 351 (2) (criminal intimidation), 336 (4) (forgery) and 356 (3) (defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with sections 66(C) (identity theft), 66(D) (cheating by personation using computer resource), and 67 (publishing obscene material) of the Information Technology (IT) Act, an official said.

According to police sources, Maharashtra Cyber and Jalgaon Police Cyber wing have sent notices to social media platform X, requesting immediate blocking and removal of the objectionable accounts.

These accounts include @PriaINC and @gajabhau, the official said.

Manipulated content depicting the minister was created and circulated across various social media platforms with the intent to tarnish his image, said the official.

“The circulated content appears to spread a misleading and provocative narrative capable of disturbing public order and creating unrest among members of the public,” according to a notice sent to X, which demanded immediate removal of the content.

The Jalgaon District Police has also independently written to X, seeking immediate action against the handle @gajabhaux. PTI DC KRK
