Pune, May 6 (PTI) Police have arrested a 70-year-old man hours after he allegedly molested his minor granddaughter at a slum dwelling in Parvati area of Pune city, officials said on Wednesday.
The incident, which involved the septuagenarian’s nine-year-old granddaughter, occurred around 9.30 pm on Tuesday, they said.
“The accused lured the minor granddaughter into a room when he was in an intoxicated state, and tried to disrobe her. The child’s screams alerted vigilant neighbours, who intervened by breaking the door to rescue her,” a police official said.
The residents then apprehended the man and alerted the police. A team of the local police arrived at the scene and took him into custody, he said.
“The victim was immediately shifted to the Sassoon General Hospital for a medical examination. While the medical report indicated that no penetrative sexual assault occurred, the child was kept under observation and has since been discharged. She is in a stable condition,” he added.
The incident sparked tension in the locality as nearby residents and others gathered on the streets in protest. Additional police force was deployed to maintain law and order, and the situation in the area is currently peaceful.
The accused was arrested under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. PTI SPK NP
