New Delhi, Apr 18 (PTI) The BJP on Saturday vowed to fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resolve of empowering women of the country, with the party chief Nitin Nabin saying it’s possible when Modi is there.
The statement came after the prime minister warned the Congress and its allies of severe punishment from the women for the “sin of foeticide.” A Constitution Amendment Bill seeking to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats and implement 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures from 2029 under Nari Shakti Vandhan Adhiniyan was defeated in the Lower House on Friday.
In an address to the nation, Modi apologised to the women and said the government may have lost the vote, but it will never give up its efforts to empower women.
“Today, our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a resolve to complete this ‘adhiniyam’ (implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures), and we too will fulfil it under the guidance of the prime minister,” Nabin said in a post on X after the prime minister’s address.
It’s because ‘Modi hai to mumkin hai (It’s possible when Modi is there)’, he added.
The BJP chief hit out at the Congress and its allies, including the TMC, DMK and the Samajwadi Party, alleging their “anti-women” face stood exposed when they voted against the Constitution amendment bill in the Lok Sabha on Friday.
“But the country is witness that the prime minister has always fulfilled every resolve he has taken for the nation. Be it the abrogation of Article 370, the construction of Ram Mandir, freeing Muslim sisters from triple talaq, or historic reforms like GST,” Nabin said.
“The Modi government has always placed the honour, security, and dignity of mothers and sisters above all, and its efforts through numerous schemes are evident to us all,” he added While 298 members voted in support of the bill in the Lok Sabha, 230 MPs voted against it. Out of 528 members who voted, the bill required 352 votes for a two-thirds majority.
BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi also slammed the Congress and allies over the defeat of the bill, alleging that they “tried to close the door for women to avail their rights.” “But the NDA’s resolve is firm under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. No matter how much effort has been made to isolate this bill, it will reach its final destination,” the BJP Rajya Sabha MP told reporters on the sidelines of an event. PTI PK VN VN
