Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 17 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday virtually inaugurated six redeveloped ‘Amrit’ railway stations in Kerala.
The stations at Tirur, Thalassery, Parpanangadi, Nilambur Road, Chalakudi and Angamali for Kaladi were among the 75 stations, redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, across the country that were virtually inaugurated by the PM, a statement by the Southern Railways said.
Ceremonial functions were held at all the above six stations in the presence of Members of Parliament (MPs), MLAs, other dignitaries and eminent personalities.
Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, the Governor of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, participated in the inauguration of the redeveloped station at Chennai Park in Tamil Nadu, a Southern Railway official said.
Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural gas and Tourism Suresh Gopi and MPs Abdussamad Samadani M P, Shafi Parambil, P V Abdul Wahab and Benny Behanan participated separately at the inaugural functions held at the six stations in Kerala.
Following the event, Gopi shared photographs of the inaugural event at Chalakudy in a Facebook post in which he said that the station was redeveloped at a cost of Rs 10 crore.
“As the gateway to tourist destinations like Athirappilly and Vazhachal, our station now has world-class facilities,” he said.
He said that the changes include a renovated station facade, a state-of-the-art waiting hall, improved parking facilities, and systems that provide more safety and convenience to passengers, calling it a proud moment for everyone.
BJP state president and Nemom MLA Rajeev Chandrasekhar also welcomed the redeveloped stations, saying that they now guarantee a world-class travel experience with improved travel facilities, better security and modern systems.
In his Facebook post, the BJP MLA said that this was “just the beginning” as 35 stations in Kerala were being renovated under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
School and college students, scouts and guides, railway employees, passengers and members of the general public participated in the inaugural events in large numbers, the statement said.
During the local functions, various cultural performances reflecting the local art forms were organised, and the winners of various competitions held in Railway schools across Southern Railway as part of the Amrit Station celebrations were presented with prizes, merit certificates and mementos, it said.
