New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday made a surprise visit to Gurudwara Rakabganj in the national capital and paid tributes to Guru Tegh Bahadur for his supreme sacrifice.

Guru Tegh Bahadur’s death anniversary was observed on Saturday.

Modi offered prayers during his visit to the gurudwara for which no police bandobast or traffic barriers were put in place to restrict movement of the common man, official sources said.

The mortal remains of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, were consigned to flames at Gurudwara Rakabganj.

The prime minister’s visit to one of the most popular gurudwaras among the devotees in the national capital assumes significance as it comes amid intense protests by farmers, especially from Punjab, against the three farm laws enacted by his government.

Modi has been at pains to explain the benefits of farm reforms and often assured farmers that the existing government mechanism to support them, including minimum support price and agriculture mandis, will continue.

  1. A very dedicated, sincere (even though clever) move to touch the hearts and minds of the agitating Sikh farmers who might be persuadable. Unfortunately though there’s a limited number of misguided Sikh brothers , particularly in the comfort zones of USA and Canada, who enjoy the company of Islamist separatist elements against India — something diametrically opposite to the causes the Sikh Gurus laid down their lives for.

    • Nonsense Dr Binoy Shanker Prasad !

If you think that Sikhs are so stupid as to not to be able to see through the cheap gimmicks and tokenism of the pracharak, you need to think again. Farmers in the Punjab and Haryana are protesting against the upending of their livelihoods by Modi’s kowtowing to the demands of his crony capitalist backers.

As long as Modi and the BJP want to make India into a Hindu rashtra, should you be surprised that people from other religions are restive ? Of course, the RSS might today say that Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains practise Indic religions as opposed to religions such as Islam or Christianity. But not many Sikhs are buying that bullshit Dr Prasad.

Additionally, your post smacks of arrogance when you claim that Sikhs who agitate in India are in thrall to “misguided Sikhs bothers in USA & Canada”. Sikhs, regardless of where they stay, do not need any guidance from Hindutva elements like you. Sikhs, like others, can think for themselves.

The Hindutva project spearheaded by Modi on behalf of the RSS & the BJP will achieve only one thing: weakening of the already fragile bonds that hold India together. Something that people like you seem to be unable to grasp – your education notwithstanding.
