Malappuram (Kerala), Jun 21 (PTI) A passenger was arrested and 1.054 kg of smuggled gold seized at Karipur airport on Sunday, officials said.

The arrested person was identified as Tasleem, a native of Kannur, who arrived from Ras Al Khaimah.

According to police, acting on a tip-off, officers intercepted Tasleem after he exited the airport following Customs clearance.

Police also detained Payyoli native Rameez and Vadakara native Ashim, who were allegedly waiting outside the airport to receive him.

During the inspection, police recovered four capsules containing gold weighing a total of 1.054 kg that had allegedly been concealed inside Tasleem’s body, officials said.

Investigators suspect that Tasleem was acting as a carrier for a gold smuggling racket.

Police said a case has been registered and the accused are being interrogated to identify others involved in the operation.

The seized gold will be handed over to the Customs Department in accordance with procedure, officials said.

However, they did not disclose the value of the gold seized. PTI TBA ROH
