New Delhi, Sep 22 (PTI) A parliamentary panel on Tuesday adopted a comprehensive report on India-Sri Lanka relations, focusing on the current status of ties and the future course.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs Shashi Tharoor said the panel adopted the report on ‘India-Sri Lanka relations and the way ahead’ unanimously.

“Our very detailed report on India-Sri Lanka relations has been adopted. Obviously, because these are very important issues, we are coming up with a very detailed and substantive report. There was full agreement and the report has now been adopted,” he told reporters after the meeting.

The Congress MP said he could not go into the contents of the report but, he said, it will become a public document soon.

Sri Lanka’s is India’s closest neighbour and the relationship between the two countries is very old, sharing a strong civilisational and historical connect. It has a central place in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision.

The bilateral relations are mature and diversified, encompassing all areas of contemporary relevance.

The shared cultural and social heritage of the two countries and the extensive people-to-people interaction of the citizens of the two countries provide the foundation to build a multi-faceted partnership.

Regular high-level visits have sustained the momentum of a strong bilateral relationship.

India has traditionally been among Sri Lanka’s largest trade partners. The merchandise trade between India and Sri Lanka amounted to USD 7.18 billion in financial year 2025-26, with India’s exports at USD 5.52 billion and Sri Lanka’s exports at USD 1.66 billion.

India is also one of the largest contributors to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Sri Lanka, with cumulative investment of USD 2.94 billion till 2025, including USD 213.67 million in 2025, according to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the Board of Investment, Sri Lanka.

The main investments from India are in the areas of energy, hospitality, real estate, manufacturing, telecommunications, banking and financial services. PTI ACB RT

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
