Chennai, Aug 23 (PTI) AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday urged the TVK-led coalition government to immediately grant a compensation of Rs 30,000 per acre to farmers whose paddy crops were inundated following sudden heavy rainfall in the Delta districts.

In a statement, Palaniswami pointed out that unexpected downpours over the last two days flooded around 2,000 acres of Kuruvai paddy crops in districts, including Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam.

The former chief minister also noted that farmers who had already relied on groundwater and taken loans after the government failed to release water from the Mettur Dam on June 12 are now left in despair as their ready-to-harvest crops lie submerged.

Criticising Chief Minister C Josepsh Vijay over unfulfilled poll promises regarding complete agricultural loan waivers, the AIADMK chief demanded that officials from the Revenue and Agriculture departments be dispatched immediately to assess the damage and distribute relief to all affected farmers. Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
