New Delhi: The number of Covid-19 cases has gone up to 10,610,065 globally, with India accounting for 5,86,956 of this figure. With 507 deaths in the last 24 hours, India has recorded highest single-day toll.

Active cases

With the addition of 18,653 fresh cases, the total number of positive cases in the country now stands at 2,20,114. This is about 37% of the total cases in the country.

Daily tests

The testing numbers have increased by about 7,000 since Tuesday but still remain below the peak of 2.31 lakh tests done on 27 June.

Mortality rate

At 507, the number of deaths recorded between Tuesday and Wednesday is the highest 24-hour toll until now. The deaths did cross 2,000 once, but that was because pending death figures were updated.

Positivity rate

The positivity rate remained more or less at the same level that it has been over the last week or so (with the exception of Sunday when low testing numbers caused it to shoot up).

Recovered cases

As many as 3,47,978 people have so far recovered from the disease across the country. Calculated on the basis of closed cases, the recovery rate comes to over 95%.

Total cases

India’s Covid cases are now inching towards the 6-lakh mark, which is likely to be crossed in the next 24 hours. However, experts say it’s the deaths, and not the number of cases, that are a cause for worry.

High-burden states

Delhi: It recorded 2,199 positive cases and 62 deaths in the last 24 hours. There are now 87,360 positive cases and the toll stands at 2,742.

Maharashtra: In the last 24 hours, the state has reported 4,878 new cases along with 95 deaths. The mortality stands at 4.49%.

Gujarat: The state reported 19 deaths and 619 cases in the last 24 hours. The state has 7,049 active cases.

Tamil Nadu: The state reported 1,943 new cases and 60 deaths. It is the leader when it comes to testing.

Tests and positive cases

Gujarat remains the laggard among the high-burden states. Gujarat’s positivity rate stands at 10.4%, still lower than both Delhi and Maharashtra. Above 10% positivity signals need to increase testing.
