New Delhi, May 6 (PTI) The number of crimes by juveniles has seen a jump of 11.2 per cent in 2024 with the registration of 34,878 cases, according to the latest report by the National Crime Records Bureau released on Wednesday.
The number stood at 31,365 in the previous year.
The crime rate, measure of crimes per lakh population, also jumped from 7.1 to 7.9 during the year, it said.
The police apprehended 42,633 juveniles, with 34,648 booked under the IPC and the BNS, and 7,985 under special laws, with majority (77.7 per cent) of arrested minors in the age group of 16-18 years, it said.
The national capital led the tally among Union territories with 2,306 crimes allegedly committed by juveniles at the rate of 41.6 per lakh population.
Bihar reported 5,037 such cases, highest among the states showing a 177 per cent jump when compared to the previous year at the rate of 10.6 crimes per lakh population. This surpasses the national average rate of 7.4.
Bihar had reported 1,818 such crimes in 2023 and 1,052 in 2022.
Heinous crimes such as rape, murder, causing bodily hurt, sexual crime against minors were leading cases against juveniles, according to the data. PTI ABS PRK
