Bhubaneswar, Sep 12 (PTI) The Nandankanan Zoological Park, Bhubaneswar, on Saturday received 58 animals belonging to 14 different species, an official said.
The animals were received as donation from the Radha Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust (RKTEWT), Gujarat, he said.
With the addition of 14 species, the total number of species in Nandankanan Zoological Park rose to 188, the official said.
The new animals comprise zebra, kangaroo, bennett’s wallaby, ring-tailed lemur, tufted capuchin, scarlet macaw, blue-and-gold macaw, green-winged macaw, sulphur-crested cockatoo, crowned crane, scarlet ibis, meerkat, cassowary and blue wildebeest.
“The new additions are expected to strengthen the zoo’s species-diversity profile and enhance its conservation-education activities. They will provide visitors with opportunities to learn about wildlife from different geographical regions, their ecological adaptations, and the importance of biodiversity conservation,” the official said.
According to the protocol, the animals will be maintained under the zoo’s established animal-care, veterinary, and husbandry systems, with emphasis on their welfare and scientific management.
