Bhubaneswar, Oct 19 (PTI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday said he was observing a subdued Durga Puja to express his solidarity with farmers who faced crop loss due to heavy rain this year.

“Expressing solidarity with the rain-affected situation in various regions of the state and with the farmer brothers, the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri @MohanMOdisha has decided to observe this year’s Sharadiya Durgapuja in a simple manner,” the chief minister’s office (CMO) said in a social media post.

He was refraining from visiting puja pandals.

Majhi prayed to Maa Durga for the well-being and prosperity of the people of the state, it said.

More than 37.43 lakh people were affected in 26 of 30 districts of Odisha and seven people were killed in the floods this year, officials said.

More than 2.12 lakh hectares of crops and 18,067 houses were damaged, and 93 livestock animals died in the heavy rain and subsequent floods in Odisha, they said. PTI BBM BBM ACD

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
