Bhopal, May 12 (PTI) The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), a student wing of the Congress party, on Tuesday held a protest here against the cancellation f the NEET exam, and burnt effigies to express their anger.
A large number of girl students took part in the protest and burnt the effigies of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and National Testing Agency (NTA) Chairman Pradeep Joshi.
The NEET (UG) 2026 exam held on May 3 was cancelled on Tuesday amid allegations of paper leak with the CBI registering an FIR after the government asked it to carry out a comprehensive inquiry into the “irregularities”. The NTA, which conducts the exam for admission to undergraduate courses in medical colleges, said fresh dates will be notified in the “next seven to 10 days”.
The cancellation triggered nationwide outrage among medical aspirants, with students raising questions on NTA’s competence and demanding that the exam be conducted by AIIMS-Delhi.
During the protest, the participants said that every year around 30 lakh students across the country prepare for the prestigious exam like NEET, but due to its cancellation the future of lakhs of students is put on hold, which damages their future.
NSUI state vice president Ravi Parmar said, “Like every year, this year also the paper of NEET, the most prestigious exam in the medical field, has been leaked, due to which more than 30 lakh girl students have been affected.” “Due to the paper leak, the girl students have been facing huge inconvenience every year. Today, we protested against this by burning the effigy of NTA chairman in the Maharana Pratap Nagar area, which is a hub of coaching centers in the state capital,” he said.
A judicial committee be formed under the chairmanship of a retired Supreme Court Justice to investigate the NEET paper leak case and an impartial investigation be conducted so that lakhs of students preparing for NEET every year can get justice, he demanded.
NSUI’s Bhopal district president Akshay Tomar said students from different backgrounds appear for the NEET exam, but in order to ensure that the children of rich people pass with good marks, the education mafia leaks the NEET paper every year, and cancels the exam later.
“We demand that apart from the rich, children from poor backgrounds who prepare for NEET with great hard work and dedication throughout the year, when they reach the examination centre after preparation, they find out that the paper has been cancelled. This harms their mental health and due to this, students go into depression, which is likely to create a shortage of good doctors in the medical field,” he added. PTI MAS NP
