Patna, Oct 11 (PTI) No significant impact is expected at the Valmikinagar barrage in Bihar’s West Champaran district from a flash flood triggered by a landslide in Nepal, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary said on Sunday.
The debris-laden flash flood, triggered by a landslide in Nepal’s Gorkha district, blocked the flow of the Budhi Gandaki river in the morning and swept away more than 35 houses and bridges.
Choudhary, who also holds the Water Resources Department portfolio, told PTI that the flood wave had crossed Devghat, around 80 km upstream of the Valmikinagar barrage.
“The discharge at the barrage is expected to rise by around 15,000 cusecs before returning to normal levels,” he said.
Choudhary said the situation was being closely monitored and all necessary precautionary measures had been taken.
“The flood wave was initially expected to reach the barrage in about six hours and could raise the discharge by around 25,000 cusecs from the prevailing level of approximately 50,000 cusecs, taking it to about 75,000 cusecs,” he said.
“This would remain within normal limits. Therefore, no significant impact is expected in Indian territory. However, necessary precautionary measures are being taken,” he added.
Water Resources Department officials said all required measures were in place.
In Nepal, the flash flood swept away houses in Salleri and Paiyuka and along the riverbed at Jagat in Gorkha district.
A suspension bridge was also washed away, authorities said, urging people living along the stream to move to higher ground. PTI PKD SOM
