New Delhi: The World Health Organization (WHO) has given the Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion 2024 to the National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS). The award is being given to NIMHANS for its outstanding contributions to the promotion of mental health and well-being, a PIB press release stated.

The Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion was established by the WHO in 2019. This award is given to individuals, institutions, and governmental or non-governmental organizations that have made significant contributions to the improvement of public health and well-being worldwide. The award is aimed at recognizing the contributions of those who have made efforts to promote health promotion, and it is a testament to the importance of their work in improving the lives of people.
The WHO believes that NIMHANS has made significant contributions to the promotion of mental health and well-being in India. The Institute’s research, education, and patient care work has been instrumental in addressing the needs of diverse populations. NIMHANS has also taken on the role of integrating mental health care into general healthcare, developing community-based strategies, and pioneering digital health interventions. These efforts have been recognized globally, and the award is a testament to the Institute’s hard work and dedication.
The award will have a positive impact on the mental health and well-being of people in India. It is hoped that the award will strengthen the ongoing efforts of NIMHANS and other organizations in promoting mental health and well-being, and that this will ultimately lead to a healthier and more productive society for the entire country.
