Gurugram, Aug 23 (PTI) A Nigerian inmate lodged in the Bhondsi jail in connection with a drug case has died following deterioration of his health, police said on Sunday.
A senior officer said Gurugram police have contacted the Nigerian Embassy and informed them about the incident. Further necessary action is being taken as per the law.
As per information received from the Bhondsi district jail, Alex Tochukwu Osuji (47), a Nigerian national, was lodged there since July 17 under a case related to possession/sale of illegal narcotic substances, registered at the Sector-29 police station.
According to police, the inmate had been suffering from fever, reduced food intake, breathing difficulty and other health issues for the past few days. As his situation deteriorated on August 22, he was shifted to the Government Hospital, Sector-10, at night for medical treatment.
Police said the inmate died on Saturday during treatment at the hospital.
A senior officer said a board was subsequently constituted under a magistrate’s supervision, and necessary proceedings were carried out as per the law.
The body of the deceased has been kept in a mortuary, he added. PTI COR PRK
