Aizawl, Sep 22 (PTI) National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) special rapporteur Sayeed Ahmed Baba on Tuesday stressed the need for greater public awareness of human rights and adequate counselling and de-addiction facilities for people, particularly youngsters, affected by substance abuse.
Addressing a meeting with heads of government departments in Saitual district, Baba said that the NHRC was established to ensure the protection and promotion of the human rights of every individual, according to official sources.
He also underlined the responsibility of government officials, whose work directly affects the lives and well-being of people, to ensure that their rights are respected and protected.
Baba said visits by NHRC representatives to different places were aimed at understanding local conditions and learning about good initiatives and practices being implemented in various areas.
He also appreciated the positive initiatives observed during his visit to Saitual.
The meeting, chaired by Saitual District Commissioner Srinivas Sadi, was attended by officials of various departments.
Sadi made a PowerPoint presentation on various aspects of the district and assured that the suggestions made by the NHRC Special Rapporteur would be followed up and acted upon to the extent possible.
During his two-day visit, Baba visited the PM Shri School, Primary School-II, Anganwadi Centre-I, Eklavya Model Residential School at Ngopa and a ginger processing unit at Hliappui on Monday.
