CRPF jawan killed in gunfight with Maoists in Jharkhand

One jawan of the Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF) specialised Commando Battalion for Resolute Action was killed in a gunfight between security forces and Maoists in the forests of Birhordera in Jharkhand’s Bokaro district Wednesday morning. Two Maoists were also killed in the encounter, which followed a joint operation of security forces launched on the basis of intelligence inputs about the presence of outlaws in the forests.

India tells Dhaka to reconsider demolition of Satyajit Ray home

Bangladesh’s Daily Star reported Tuesday that the ancestral home of Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, formerly used as Mymensingh Shishu Academy, is being demolished to make way for a new semi-concrete structure. The Indian government Tuesday volunteered to help in repair and reconstruction of the property into a “museum of literature”.

Mamata to lead march against ‘harassment’ of Bengali-speaking people

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lead a protest march Wednesday over alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people in states government by the BJP. The march will begin at College Square, Kolkata, around 1pm and conclude at Dharmatala in the heart of the city.

Congress demands Modi answer Trump’s India-Pak ‘ceasefire’ claim

The Congress has demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi answer US President Donald Trump’s claim over brokering May’s ceasefire between India and Pakistan, in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha in the upcoming Parliament session. Congress general secretary in charge of communications Jairam Ramesh tagged a post carrying Trump’s latest remarks referring to the trade deal with India, saying: “Parliament will resume from July 21st. The score will no doubt change before then. But the PM has to answer clearly in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. The nation wants to know.”

Five Delhi schools get bomb threat, third straight day of hoax

Five private schools in Delhi were in panic after receiving a bomb threat through email, prompting authorities to immediately evacuate the premises for a thorough check. This was the third consecutive day that educational institutes in the Capital were targeted with bomb threats that turned out to be hoaxes.

Protests erupt in Odisha over student’s self-immolation

Massive protests were held outside the Odisha Assembly after a 20-year-old girl self-immolated because of alleged inaction following sexual harassment by a teacher. The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has called for an eight-hour bandh in Balasore district and demanded a judicial probe into the incident. Videos on social media show protesters trying to break barricades and police forces shooting water canons and teargas shells to disperse them.

India’s unemployment rate 5.6% in June, same as May

Unemployment rate in India was 5.6 percent in June, the same as May, according to Periodic Labour Force Survey (PFLS) data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) Tuesday. The NSO started releasing these numbers monthly from April this year. Because labour market conditions are prone to seasonal fluctuations, sequential monthly numbers do not lend themselves to much analysis, and one will have to wait until April 2026 to make year-on-year comparisons of numbers.

CDS Chauhan cites Op Sindoor, says can’t win with ‘yesterday’s weapon’

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan has stressed on urgent need for modernisation of defence capabilities, saying that “today’s war has to be fought with tomorrow’s technology”, not with outdated systems. Speaking at a workshop on UAV and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems, he asserted that India must reduce its reliance on foreign niche technologies critical to its strategic missions.

Fauja Singh hit-and-run case: SUV driver arrested

The Punjab Police have arrested a man whose SUV allegedly struck and killed 114-year-old Fauja Singh—believed to be the world’s oldest marathoner—on a highway in his native Jalandhar district. The accused has been identified as Amritpal Dhillon, a 26-year-old NRI.

SC defers hearing on ‘Udaipur Files’, asks filmmakers to wait for panel’s decision

The Supreme Court has deferred for 21 July the hearing on the film Udaipur Files- Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder, and asked the filmmakers to await a decision of the panel appointed by the Centre to hear objections against the movie. The panel is scheduled to meet Wednesday afternoon. Pleas have filed seeking a ban on the film over its potential to “promote disharmony” in society.
