Kolkata, Oct 20 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday stressed the need to improve infrastructure and welfare facilities at the historic Presidency Correctional Home here, as he promised higher food allowances for inmates and enhanced financial benefits for prison personnel.

Visiting the correctional home in Alipore on the day of ‘Maha Navami’, Adhikari emphasised the importance of preserving its heritage, while improving facilities for inmates and staff.

He said the state government would look to increase the food allowance for inmates and hike financial incentives for prison personnel.

The chief minister also underscored the need to rehabilitate prisoners, particularly those serving long-term sentences, and help them reintegrate into the society after their release.

Correctional homes should focus not merely on confinement, but also on reforms and rehabilitation, enabling inmates to lead constructive lives, he said.

Adhikari also highlighted the need to improve healthcare facilities and hospital-related allocations for inmates, alongside upgrading the correctional home’s infrastructure.

The CM then visited the Durga Puja at the house of BJP Rajya Sabha MP Koel Mallick in Kolkata.

“There is no political connection behind this visit,” Adhikari added. PTI SUS RBT

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
