New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) More than 430 students and teachers from five Delhi schools participated in a plantation drive at the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary on Tuesday to mark World Nature Conservation Day as part of the Delhi government’s target of planting 70 lakh trees and saplings across the city this year.
The drive was organised by the Delhi government’s Environment Department under its “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign to increase green cover and promote environmental awareness among school students.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said young people have a key role in shaping Delhi’s green future and can inspire their families and communities to contribute towards making the capital cleaner and greener.
“Young people are ambassadors of environmental conservation. Through sustained public participation, the Delhi government is committed to building a healthier, greener and more environmentally resilient capital,” he said.
The plantation drive is part of the Delhi government’s year-long campaign to plant 70 lakh trees and saplings across the capital under the Centre’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative.
Sirsa said the campaign has grown into a people’s movement with participation from members of the judiciary, government officials, diplomats from over 70 countries, educational institutions, religious organisations and citizens.
According to the government, every sapling planted under the campaign is being geo-tagged and monitored to improve its long-term survival.
It said a 10-year plantation strategy has been prepared with a focus on planting native species that provide greater shade, require less water, generate more oxygen and help reduce pollution.
