Dimapur, Jun 27 (PTI) A Naga youth organisation on Saturday demanded that the Centre implement a final Naga political solution within three months or face civil disobedience and non-cooperation movement.
A rally, dubbed the “Naga Youth Movement”, was held by the organisation at Dimapur under the theme “Hear the Youth Honour the Truth.” In a memorandum addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Naga youth group ‘Fed up Nagas’ said it has been 11 years since the signing of the Framework Agreement and nine years since the Agreed Position, yet the prolonged delay in resolving the Naga political issue has led to lawlessness, intimidation, extortion, corruption, distrust and growing societal disunity.
“The patience of the Naga people has been stretched to its breaking point. The Government of India can no longer afford the luxury of delay, evasion and empty promises,” the memorandum stated, urging the Centre to immediately convene all Naga political negotiators for a round-table meeting and sign a comprehensive, binding agreement based on the two existing political accords.
The organisation demanded an immediate and conclusive solution anchored on the Framework Agreement and the Agreed Position, with implementation within three months from June 27, backed by Naga stakeholders.
It warned that if the Centre once again failed to honour its commitments, the Fed Up Nagas would launch civil disobedience and a non-cooperation movement to restore the dignity and identity of the Naga people and assert their collective rights.
Leaders of Naga political groups were expected to attend the rally, but only Working Committee of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) Convenor M Kitovi Zhimomi was present.
Zhimomi lauded the participation of Naga youth, describing them as the real stakeholders in the peace process.
“Unlike before, it is the youth who are making this appeal to the Government of India. They want peace, progress and certainty for their future,” he said.
The WC NNPGs, comprising seven Naga political groups, entered into parallel negotiations with the Centre for a final Naga political settlement and signed the Agreed Position on November 17, 2017. The agreement came two years after the Government of India and the NSCN-IM signed the Framework Agreement in August 3, 2015.
While negotiations on the Naga political issue were officially declared to have concluded in October 2019, a final settlement remains elusive.
The NSCN-IM has maintained its demand for a separate Naga flag and constitution, whereas the NNPGs have indicated their willingness to accept an interim settlement on issues agreed upon, while continuing discussions on the remaining unresolved demands. PTI CORR NBS NBS RG
