Kottayam (Kerala), Apr 24 (PTI) Kerala Devaswom Minister V N Vasavan on Friday said safer alternatives are needed to prevent fireworks accidents in the wake of the Mundathikode explosion that claimed 15 lives in Thrissur.

Speaking to reporters, Vasavan said the government has initiated discussions to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

“Fireworks displays should shift focus from loud sound to visual appeal, adopting safer and more colour-oriented formats similar to those seen at international events like the Olympics,” he said.

Vasavan said efforts are underway to identify body parts recovered from the explosion site.

“Earlier, we recovered 10 bodies. Later, additional body parts were found. DNA tests on the recovered remains are ongoing. During a search on Thursday, a man’s head was recovered, which is suspected to be that of a missing person named Gireesh. This has to be confirmed through forensic examination,” he said.

He said documents regarding the number of persons working at the fireworks manufacturing unit were destroyed in the explosion, and based on statements from survivors, it is estimated that around 38 persons were present at the site.

He added that the best possible treatment would be ensured for the injured and appreciated the care provided by officials of Thrissur Medical College, as well as doctors from other medical colleges who extended assistance.

On April 21, explosions occurred at a unit manufacturing fireworks for Thiruvambadi Devaswom as part of the Thrissur Pooram at Mundathikode, killing 15 persons, while four others remain missing. PTI CORR TBA SSK
