Mumbai, Oct 25 (PTI) The Mumbai Police on Sunday took nearly 140 people in preventive custody, foiling their plan to participate in separate protests at Shivaji Park and Chaityabhoomi allegedly organised without permission, officials said.

Approximately 120 individuals assembled at Shivaji Park for an unauthorised ‘Adivasi Gen Z’ protest were rounded up and taken to the local police station.

In a separate action nearby, police detained 20 to 25 people gathered at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar for an unauthorised candle march.

Chaityabhoomi is the cremation site of D. B. R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution.

All the detained individuals were taken into preventive custody as the gatherings lacked necessary permissions and precautions were being taken to maintain law and order in the area, police officials said.

The process of completing official formalities and releasing the detainees is currently underway, officials added. PTI ZA NSK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
