New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) With an aim to better manage growing traffic in the national capital, the Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) 2047 has suggested that the transport department explore the idea of ‘congestion pricing’ — a levy charged on private vehicles for moving through certain areas during peak hours.
Approved by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the draft plan is likely to be approved by the Centre within a week.
“Road owning agencies, transport department in consultation with traffic police shall identify areas in the city to be designated as congestion pricing zones. These may include areas around TOD Nodes, Walled City Heritage Zone and the Metropolitan City Centre,” the plan reads.
The Transit Oriented Development (TOD) nodes are the areas developed within the 500 metre radius of metro and rail and rapid rail lines.
Authorities may explore RFID tagging of private vehicles to implement congestion pricing, officials added.
Under its vision for the future, to further discourage the use of private vehicles, MPD 2047 suggests implementation of ‘dynamic parking pricing’ under which the parking charges may vary depending on the location and time of the day.
“The public parking at work centres, entertainment or cultural hubs, markets, etc. shall be restricted, which will be a deterrent to private vehicular trips.
“Supply of public parking: on-street and off-street shall be restricted in areas with high accessibility to public transport. Dynamic parking pricing, based on location and time of day to be utilised as a tool to discourage the use of private vehicle,” the plan added.
