Gwalior (MP), Sep 17 (PTI) Students of the Laxmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), a city-based Central government institute, continued their protest over the death of a female student at its Guwahati campus for the ninth day on Thursday.
The protesters are seeking resignation of the registrar and Rs 50 lakh compensation for the deceased’s family.
Shruti Upadhyay (22), a third-year BPEd student at the LNIPE Guwahati campus, died on September 9 after falling ill. Students have questioned the healthcare facilities at the Guwahati campus and have been staging a sit-in outside the main gate of the institute here.
Wearing black T-shirts and with tapes over their mouths, protesting students told reporters that their agitation would continue until the demands were met.
They had not received any concrete assurance from the institute’s vice-chancellor or the Union Sports Ministry, and pressure was being put on them and the deceased’s family to end the protest, they claimed.
“Our protest is completely peaceful and will continue in the same manner,” said a student.
LNIPE Vice-Chancellor Kalpana Sharma told reporters that she visited the Guwahati campus after Upadhyay’s death.
“Some demands of the students have been accepted. The concerned teacher was suspended and the doctor and nurse at the Guwahati campus were removed. A committee has been constituted for an impartial inquiry,” she said.
The Guwahati administration has given Rs 4 lakh to the deceased’s family on behalf of the Assam government and the institute has given Rs 5 lakh as compensation, Sharma said.
“Besides, the institute will pay whatever medical bills the family submits,” she said.
Talks were on with the protesting students, the vice chancellor said, appealing to them to end the agitation and return to classes. PTI COR LAL KRK
