Bhopal, Oct 14 (PTI) An in-charge of a police station in Bhopal was suspended on Wednesday for allegedly passing offensive remarks and abusing tribal students during their protest here, an official said.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, following which Ratan Singh Parihar, in-charge of the Misrod police station, was suspended, he said.

Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar also ordered a departmental inquiry into the matter, according to him.

“The departmental inquiry will investigate the facts related to the case, and further action will be taken based on the findings,” he said.

A protest had been organised by the youth wing of the Gondwana Gantantra Party on Tuesday over the issues being faced by tribal students. In a video, the protesters are seen chanting “Jai Johar” (a traditional greeting used by tribals) during the protest.

The video shows the police station in-charge objecting to this and purportedly using abusive language against the protesting tribal students.

After the video surfaced on social media, the Congress and other tribal organisations demanded action against Parihar.

Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Umang Singhar, said that the incident wherein the police official used “abusive language” against tribal students for saying “Johar” and raising their voice for the protection of the Constitution and democracy is extremely serious and condemnable.

“The term ‘Johar’ is not an abuse, but a symbol of our tribal culture, identity, self-respect, and honor! This greeting conveys a message of love, respect, and brotherhood. Insults to our culture and identity will not be tolerated at any cost,” he said.

Targeting Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Singhar said the power of the uniform should not be used to humiliate citizens, but to protect their rights.

“Law enforcers are expected to respect the law and the Constitution. If any police officer has misused his position, he must be held accountable,” he said.

He demanded that an FIR be filed against the official and strict action be taken against him. PTI MAS NP

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
