Bhopal, Jul 19 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh cabinet on Sunday approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) draft bill for presentation in the state assembly, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said.

The five-day monsoon session of the state assembly begins on Monday.

The draft bill was prepared by taking suggestions from all sections of society, Yadav said, adding it was supported by the majority of society members.

It would apply to all sections of society, except tribal communities, Yadav said.

The marriageable age for men is 21 and for women 18, he said, adding that marriage registration is mandatory under the UCC.

The state cabinet approved the draft bill at its meeting chaired by CM Yadav in Bhopal on Sunday.

A government-appointed multi-member committee, constituted to draft a Uniform Civil Code for Madhya Pradesh and headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, submitted its report to the chief minister recently, recommending that Scheduled Tribes (adivasis) be excluded from the purview of the UCC.

The high-level panel was tasked with studying the prevailing systems related to various personal and family matters, such as marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, adoption, and live-in relationships.

Accordingly, the committee prepared a draft in accordance with the social, cultural, and economic conditions of Madhya Pradesh. The panel has worked towards ensuring gender equality, ensuring various ceremonial practices remain unaffected, respecting prevalent customs and practices, and constitutional provisions and public policy, a statement earlier said. Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
