Gurugram, Jul 16 (PTI) A moving car suddenly caught fire on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway near the Kherki Daula toll plaza on Thursday afternoon, turning into a ball of fire within moments.

The driver escaped unhurt by jumping out in time, while traffic was disrupted for some time as police and firefighters battled to douse the blaze.

According to police, the car caught fire while it was in motion on the expressway. A traffic police patrol team approaching from behind spotted the burning vehicle, immediately rushed to the scene, and brought the situation under control.

Police personnel helped the driver move to safety, diverted nearby vehicles away from the burning car and alerted the fire department.

In the meantime, the traffic police stopped a passing water tanker and used its water to try to contain the flames until firefighters arrived. The blaze was brought under control after nearly half an hour of efforts, but the car was completely gutted by then.

The police later restored traffic movement and cleared the congestion caused by the incident.

No one was injured in the incident.

“The cause of the fire has not been ascertained yet. Preliminary investigations suggest extreme heat, vehicle overheating or a short circuit in the wiring as possible causes. The actual cause will be known only after a technical investigation,” a senior police officer said. PTI COR NB NB
