Morbi, Aug 7 (PTI) A team of experts has found that the mysterious ripples and continuous waves in a newly constructed well in Gujarat’s Morbi district were likely caused by groundwater recharge and trapped air pressure following heavy rainfall.
The State Water Data Centre team from Gandhinagar, which inspected the site on Friday, ruled out any seismic activity or geological disturbance as the cause of the unusual phenomenon that began on August 2.
An 18-foot-deep farm well in Virparda village in Morbi has been drawing large crowds because the water inside is continuously moving and creating wave-like ripples on its own. Apart from local residents, passersby and people travelling on the nearby highway are stopping by the well for the unusual sight.
Morbi Collector Swapnil Khare said, “A groundwater investigation team from the State Water Data Centre in Gandhinagar visited the place on Friday. Their preliminary investigation suggests that groundwater recharge due to heavy rainfall may have triggered this phenomenon.
Nothing suspicious had been detected, he said.
Officials also ruled out seismic activity in the area.
They said the continuous ripples were most likely caused by gas or trapped air pressure within the ground rather than any geological disturbance.
The officials from Gandhinagar will submit a detailed report on the phenomenon after completing their investigation, Khare said.
The well’s owner, farmer Pranjivan Sadariya, said he first noticed the activity on August 2.
“When I arrived at my farm that day, water from the well was spilling over the edge, and it has continued ever since,” he said.
