New Delhi, Oct 21 (PTI) The government on Wednesday signed a contract worth nearly Rs 770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to procure improved low-level lightweight radars for the Army, the defence ministry said, underlining that the procurement is a significant step towards indigenisation of air defence platforms.

The radar system has the capability of detecting and tracking fighter-size targets and mini or micro drones, and it has an additional capability of prioritising aerial targets. This will enable the Indian Army to successfully counter the threat of Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), it said.

The contract was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in Delhi.

The ministry signed a contract with BEL to procure Improved Low Level Light Weight Radar (LLLR-I) at a cost of approximately Rs 770 crore on Wednesday, it said in a statement.

Aligning with the government’s vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, the procurement is a significant step towards indigenisation of air defence platforms with a boost to India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, including Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and building a resilient, self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry, it said. Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
