Pune, Oct 23 (PTI) Union minister Murlidhar Mohol and MVA candidate for the Pune Graduates’ Constituency, Harshada Deshmukh-Jadhav, were among those who cast their votes on Friday morning as polling began for the Pune Teachers’ and Graduates’ seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

In the Pune Graduates’ constituency, the BJP has fielded Smita Jadhav against NCP (SP) candidate Harshada Deshmukh-Jadhav, while Shiv Sena (UBT) has also fielded a candidate.

In the Pune Teachers’ constituency, the BJP has fielded Kaustubh Gawde against sitting MLC Jayant Asgaonkar of the Congress. The Shiv Sena is backing independent candidate Sachin Sanap, an officer on special duty (OSD) to state minister Uday Samant.

“Going by the experience of the previous elections and local body elections, the people of Maharashtra are with the BJP,” Mohol said after casting his vote.

The BJP leader said the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has done good work, and that people have witnessed the pace of development.

“Educated voters are thoughtful and make their decisions after careful consideration. I am confident that the Mahayuti alliance will win all five seats,” he said.

Besides the two seats in Pune, the biennial elections are also being held in the Nagpur Division Graduates’, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) Graduates’ and Amravati Teachers’ constituencies.

The Mahayuti, comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Sunetra Pawar-led NCP, and the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance of the Congress, Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) and Uddhav Thackeray-headed Shiv Sena (UBT) are contesting all five seats.

The counting of votes is scheduled for October 27, while the election process will be completed by October 31, officials have said. PTI SPK NR

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
