Aizawl, Jul 28 (PTI) The Mizoram government has sought enhanced cooperation with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) to strengthen the state’s disaster resilience, officials said on Tuesday.
During a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, Kumar Kishore, in New Delhi, Mizoram Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma outlined the state’s growing vulnerability to landslides, rockfalls, earthquakes, environmental degradation, and climate-induced disasters, they said.
He also highlighted the Mizoram government’s initiative to promote risk-informed urban planning, strengthening building regulations through mandatory geotechnical investigations, and to develop Thenzawl in Serchhip district as a ‘Peace City’ to reduce developmental pressure on Aizawl, according to an official statement.
Lalnilawma briefed the UNDRR official on Mizoram’s collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in implementing landslide mitigation measures, strengthening early warning systems, building resilient infrastructure, and enhancing disaster preparedness, it said.
He stressed the need for continued technical assistance to further boost institutional capacity and improve the state’s resilience against natural hazards.
“Kumar Kishore commended Mizoram’s proactive approach to disaster risk reduction and expressed UNDRR’s readiness to facilitate international knowledge exchange, connect the state with global experts, and showcase Mizoram’s best practices on international platforms,” the statement said.
The meeting also discussed the proposed North-East Regional Disaster Management Conclave, which Mizoram plans to host later this year.
During the discussions, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening resilient infrastructure, improving preparedness for emerging climate and geological risks, and advancing the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the statement added. PTI CORR RBT
