Aizawl, Sep 18 (PTI) Mizoram Education Minister Vanlalthlana has urged the Centre to frame education policies keeping in view the distinct geographical and socio-economic conditions of the northeastern states, an official statement said on Friday.
Addressing the North East Education Conclave 2026 at Chumoukedima in Nagaland, Vanlalthlana said several challenges faced by the region could not be addressed through a uniform approach designed for larger states.
He highlighted Mizoram’s progress in the education sector as well as the challenges in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The minister said declining enrolment in government schools, a shortage of secondary schools in rural areas, inadequate manpower in District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) and State Councils of Educational Research and Training (SCERTs), poor internet connectivity and difficulties in providing solar power were among the major concerns faced by Mizoram and other northeastern states.
He also pointed to financial constraints faced by northeastern states in recruiting additional personnel and developing education infrastructure, and urged the Centre to recognise these as common regional challenges and provide appropriate support.
Vanlalthlana said Mizoram had introduced the Standardised Assessment for Elementary Schools and was effectively using the Vidya Samiksha Kendra to strengthen monitoring and assessment.
He also highlighted project Intodelh, which seeks to equip students with knowledge of financial management and entrepreneurship to help them become self-reliant.
The Mizoram delegation submitted proposals on implementing Samagra Shiksha 3.0 and PM-USHA, besides suggesting education strategies suited to the state’s geographical conditions and the way of life of its people, the statement said. PTI CORR MNB
