Aizawl, Jun 2 (PTI) Mizoram’s largest civil society organisation, the Young Mizo Association (YMA) and churches on Tuesday pledged closer collaboration in the fight against the increasing drug abuse and drug trafficking in the state, a leader said.
The meeting of leaders of the central committee of Young Mizo Association (CYMA) and Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a conglomerate of major churches in the state, held in Aizawl, emphasised the need for stronger community and church involvement to address the growing threat posed by narcotics, according to CYMA general secretary Malsawmliana.
While acknowledging the steps various churches have already taken to combat drug abuse and its associated social problems, the CYMA leaders urged the churches to take intensified action and broader cooperation among stakeholders due to the alarming impact of drugs on youth and families, he said.
As part of the campaign, the CYMA urged the church body to hold mass prayer programmes in their respective local churches under a common theme to reinforce collective efforts against substance abuse, Malsawmliana said.
During the meeting, church leaders were urged to exercise caution, particularly when issuing important documents, including baptism certificates, to ensure that such documents are not issued to non-local residents and foreign nationals, he said.
Referring to a resolution adopted at last year’s YMA general assembly, which called on the Central YMA to take steps to prevent the emergence of ethnic divisions among the various Mizo communities residing in Mizoram, the CYMA leaders also urged all churches to work actively toward eliminating ethnic division or alienation from mainstream Mizo, and to make every possible effort to promote unity and harmony among various Mizo communities in the state, Malsawmliana added.
