Aizawl, Apr 24 (PTI) BJP national spokesperson Shanzia Ilmi on Friday launched a scathing attack on Congress and other opposition parties at the Centre, accusing them of betraying half the population of the country by opposing the women’s reservation bill.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference here, Ilmi said the parliamentary discussions held on April 16 and 17 regarding the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, the Delimitation Bill, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill represented a historic opportunity for India’s democratic future.

“These two days exposed a moral decline within the Opposition. The Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress and DMK did not merely oppose a bill; they stood exposed before half the nation’s population,” she said.

Ilmi said the BJP had strongly condemned what she called the “undemocratic and anti-women conduct” of the opposition in Parliament.

“These parties have effectively stabbed millions of Indian mothers, sisters, and daughters in the back. This episode clarifies that whenever the question of equal participation for women arises, these parties erect walls of political excuses to ensure delay,” the BJP leader said.

The decades-long conspiracy to keep women away from Parliament and state assemblies has once again been laid bare, she added.

Ilmi said that taking a strong stand against this anti-women attitude, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the truth before the nation.

He clearly stated that this was not a moment for politics, but for taking a decision in national interest, she said.

“The PM emphasised that giving half the population of the country a share in policymaking is not a favour, but their natural right, which Congress and its allies kept hostage for decades,” she said.

The PM also warned that the women of India are no longer silent spectators, but they are active participants and have the power to directly influence electoral outcomes, she said.

“With lakhs of women successfully leading at the panchayat levels, and are now fully prepared to play their role in Parliament and Assemblies, delaying this transition is not just a legislative hurdle, but it is the strangulation of social and democratic progress. Those responsible will face strong anger from women in every election,” Ilmi warned. PTI CORR MNB
