New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) The Union home ministry notified the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as vice president on Tuesday, a day after he sent a letter to President Droupadi Murmu saying he was stepping down with immediate effect due to medical reasons.
In a gazette notification signed by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) reproduced Dhankhar’s resignation letter, which he made public on Monday evening.
“The following resignation of Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, Vice President of India, is hereby published for general information,” the notification said.
Earlier in the day, the Rajya Sabha was informed about the MHA’s notification.
Soon after the House met for Question Hour at 12 noon, Ghanshyam Tiwari, who was in the Chair, informed members about the notification.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs, vide notification dated July 22, 2025, has conveyed the resignation of Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar under Article 67 (A) of the Constitution with immediate effect,” Tiwari announced.
The vice president of India is ex-officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, who presided over the proceedings of the House soon after it met, informed the members that the further constitutional process concerning vacancy in the Office of Vice President of India will be communicated as and when received.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Dhankhar got many opportunities to serve the country in various capacities and wished him good health.
Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022.
In his resignation letter, Dhankhar said, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.” He also thanked PM Modi, Council of Ministers and MPs for their support and cooperation during his tenure.
“I express my deep gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the esteemed Council of Ministers. Prime Minister’s cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office.
“The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament would ever be cherished and embedded in my memory.
