Mathura (UP), Aug 22 (PTI) A speeding tractor allegedly ran over a municipal sanitation worker who was on his way to work on the Agra-Delhi highway in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, killing him instantly, police said.

Angered by the incident, sanitation workers placed the body at the Bharatpur Gate intersection near the Kotwali police station and staged a road blockade. They were demanding compensation for the deceased’s dependents and the arrest of the tractor driver.

SHO of Highway police station Arvind Kumar said that Omprakash (45), the sanitation worker employed by the municipal corporation, was on his way from home to report for duty in Ward No 15 on Saturday morning when a speeding tractor struck him from behind.

Upon learning of the incident, agitated sanitation workers initially prevented the police from removing the body; later, as their numbers swelled, they took the body to the Bharatpur Gate intersection near the Kotwali and blocked traffic.

They demanded compensation for the deceased’s family and strict action against the tractor driver responsible for the accident. The blockade continued for several hours.

Traffic returned to normal after about five hours, following assurances from officials.

The body of the deceased has been sent for a post-mortem examination, police said, adding that efforts are underway to arrest the tractor driver, police said. PTI COR NAV MPL MPL

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
