Dharmavaram (Andhra Pradesh), May 6 (PTI) A masked gang stole an ATM of a private bank reportedly having around Rs 4.5 lakh in cash here in Sri Sathyasai district on Wednesday, police said.

Around four thieves struck the IDFC First Bank ATM at Dharmavaram around 3.40 am. They dragged the ATM with the help of ropes and shifted it into a four-wheeler in less than six minutes, they said.

“Yes, it (ATM robbery) is true. Around 3.40 am (on Wednesday) it happened,” Sri Sathyasai district superintendent of police S Satish told PTI.

After breaking off the ATM, the thieves drove it away in a light commercial vehicle, he said.

While the thieves were busy uprooting the roadside ATM, several “unsuspecting” vehicles passed by, according to a video of the theft which went viral.

According to the SP, the bank had replenished the ATM with Rs 2 lakh cash on Tuesday evening while the amount deposited into it by people is yet to be ascertained.

While the IDFC First Bank is yet to lodge an official complaint, Satish said four to five police teams have been set in motion to apprehend the thieves. PTI STH KH
