Vav-Tharad (Gujarat), Oct 14 (PTI) In a horrific incident, a man allegedly doused his two-year-old son with petrol and burnt him alive in Gujarat’s Vav-Tharad district as he considered raising the child a burden after his wife became estranged, a senior police official said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday in Suigam taluka of the district and the accused, Ashok Raval, has been arrested, he said, adding a first information report (FIR) was registered and further investigation was underway.

Raval set the toddler on fire and then took him to a hospital, where he was declared dead, Vav-Tharad Superintendent of Police C J Teraiya told PTI.

According to the FIR, Raval’s wife had been staying at her parental home following a marital dispute, and he had been living with their son in Suigam for the past three months.

Raval allegedly did not want to raise the child on his own. Considering the boy a burden, he poured petrol on the toddler and set him on fire, said police, citing the FIR. PTI KVM RSY

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
