Baripada, Oct 11 (PTI) A man and his wife died on Sunday after they fell ill following a funeral ceremony in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, police said.

The incident took place at Chaturisahi village in Bishoi police station area.

The deceased were identified as Bhanja Sirka (35) and his wife Biranga Naik (27), residents of Similipal area, a police officer said.

The couple had returned home on Saturday night after attending the funeral feast at the village, he said.

Around 3 am, both of them complained of severe abdominal pain, following which relatives first took them to the Manada Community Health Centre, where Sirka died, police said.

His wife was later shifted to Rairangpur hospital in a critical condition. She died at the medical facility shortly after admission, Bishoi police station inspector-in-charge Subarna Behera said.

The police have registered a case and launched an investigation, he said.

“Contaminated food is suspected to be the cause of their death, though the exact reason can be ascertained after obtaining the post-mortem report and completion of the investigation,” Behera said.

Meanwhile, locals have urged the district administration to provide assistance for taking care of two minor children of the deceased. PTI CORR BBM RBT

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
