Mumbai, Sep 7 (PTI) The Mumbai Crime Branch arrested a man allegedly with 2,128 fake Indian currency notes (FICN) of Rs 500 denomination with a face value of Rs 10.64 lakh, an official said on Monday.
Danish Khan (38), a resident of Koparkhairane in Navi Mumbai, was held when he arrived near the Metro Cinema in south Mumbai to circulate the fake notes, the official said.
A 55-year-old woman was detained in connection with the racket. She was later released after being served a notice under legal provisions, the official said.
“Crime Branch Unit-2 received a specific tip-off that two persons would be arriving near Metro Cinema to sell high-quality FICN. A team under Inspector Dilip Tejankar laid a trap at the location on Sunday morning. The team recovered 2,128 fake notes of Rs 500 denomination with a face value of Rs 10.64 lakh,” he said.
Preliminary investigation revealed the syndicate operated on a specific modus operandi, offering two fake Rs 500 notes in exchange for one genuine Rs 500 note, he added.
A case has been registered at Azad Maidan police station and further probe into the network is underway, the official said. PTI ZA BNM
