Dumka, Oct 14 (PTI) A man has been arrested for allegedly raping and strangling a 14-year-old girl to death in Jharkhand’s Dumka district, police said on Wednesday.

The accused was apprehended on Monday night from his house, a senior police officer said.

The body of the Class-9 student was found around 500 metres from her house in a semi-naked condition on October 9 in the Kathikund police station area, he said.

Police subsequently initiated an investigation based on the statement of the girl’s parents, the officer said.

“We questioned nearly 500 people before nabbing the accused. During interrogation, the 35-year-old man confessed to the crime,” SP Pitamber Singh Kherwar said.

Injury marks on the face of the accused, likely caused while the girl was trying to save herself during strangulation, helped the police identify him, another officer said.

A blood-stained towel and the T-shirt worn by the accused at the time of the incident have also been recovered, Kathikund police station in-charge Balram Singh said. PTI RPS RBT

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
