Nagpur, Sep 18 (PTI) Maharashtra Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Friday criticised the Trinamool Congress, claiming that the Mamata Banerjee-founded party lost its name and election symbol after its voters in West Bengal abandoned it for years of “exploitative politics”.
Speaking to reporters here, the senior BJP leader said that former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was no longer able to save her party because her electoral support base has completely eroded, leaving TMC unable to meet basic registration criteria.
He dismissed the Opposition’s uproar over the Election Commission’s order freezing the TMC’s party name and symbol, and termed the INDIA bloc a “sinking ship”.
Bawankule claimed that the constituent parties of the Opposition alliance have drifted apart after taking pledges together during the Lok Sabha elections, and all of them have sunk.
“I think Mamata Banerjee is capable of taking care of her party. But her politics has been exploitative, and she has lost votes because of that, and she is unable to save her party. The same will happen to Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and to all the parties in the INDIA alliance in the future,” he said, claiming that by 2029, the Congress will also not be able to save itself.
In its interim order issued on Thursday night, the Election Commission, after hearing leaders of the two factions led by Mamata Banerjee and Arup Roy, said the matter requires substantive determination by the poll body under the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order 1968.
Pending the determination, neither faction will be allowed to use the name ‘All India Trinamool Congress’ or the reserved ‘Flowers and Grass’ symbol in the October 6 bypolls, the commission stated. PTI CLS ARU
