Thane, May 6 (PTI) A 27-year-old undertrial prisoner lodged in a jail in Maharashtra’s Thane district died after complaining of giddiness and breathing problems, following which his family accused the authorities of negligence, an official said on Wednesday.

Undertrial Rushikesh Pawar, a resident of the Dombivali area, was arrested in connection with a dispute over a weekly market and was being held in the Aadharwadi jail.

According to the police, Pawar complained of feeling dizzy and struggled to breathe on Tuesday. He was initially taken to the jail hospital, from where he was referred to the Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar. Upon arrival around 9.30 pm, doctors declared him dead.

His family members and locals gathered outside the hospital late at night, alleging gross negligence by the jail administration.

They claimed Pawar began experiencing chest pain around 5.00 pm, but there was a delay in providing proper medical transport. They alleged that instead of being shifted in an ambulance, he was taken to the central hospital in the personal car of a jail official, which they claim led to the delay and subsequent death.

An official from the Khadakpada police station in Kalyan said, “Pawar’s family has raised questions about the timing of the shift and transport. We have registered a case of accidental death and are probing the matter to establish the exact cause of death,” an official said. PTI COR NR
