Mumbai, Oct 15 (PTI) Maharashtra will make six years the minimum age for admission to Class 1 from 2030-31 academic year, an official said on Thursday.

As per a government resolution issued by the School Education Department, children must have completed the prescribed minimum age by June 30 of the relevant year.

The criteria will be introduced in phases, starting with nursery admissions in 2027-28 academic year, the GR said.

Children will have to be at least three years old for admission to Nursery or Balvatika-1 from 2027-28, four years old for Junior KG or Balvatika-2 from 2028-29, and five years old for Senior KG or Balvatika-3 from 2029-30, the GR said.

The minimum age of six years for Class 1 admission will come into effect from 2030-31, it added.

As per the government, different age cut-off dates were being followed for Class 1 admissions in schools affiliated with the state board, CBSE, ICSE and IB. There was no uniform minimum age requirement for admission to pre-primary classes, it pointed out.

“The state has fixed the age criteria in accordance with the provisions of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Centre’s communication that children should be more than six years old for admission to Class 1,” the GR noted.

The revised age criteria will not apply to students already enrolled in nursery to Class 1 during the 2026-27 academic year. Regular students who have passed the previous class from any recognised school will also be exempt from the new age requirements when seeking admission to the next higher class.

The government resolution also permits school heads to grant relaxation of 15 days in the minimum and maximum age limits for admissions from nursery to Class 1.

The Directorate of Primary Education in Pune will issue further instructions and guidelines for admissions under the revised age criteria, it said. PTI ND BNM

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
