Mumbai: Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Maharashtra government has launched a disaster management training programme for Industrial Training Institute (ITI) students across the state.

The state’s Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha launched the programme Thursday at the Rajmata Jijau government ITI (women) in Thane. The training initiative will be eventually taken to ITIs elsewhere in Maharashtra.

Apart from this, disaster management workshops will also be conducted online in all ITIs, Lodha said. The department has tied up with an institute called Aniruddha’s Academy of Disaster Management to administer the course.

“Thousands of ITI students are being trained in disaster management in the wake of border tensions,” a statement from Lodha’s office said.

Speaking at the inauguration, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Lodha said, “Whether manmade or natural, every citizen must be trained in how to manage and respond to disasters. Though mankind has progressed, the nature of disasters has also evolved. Our goal is to equip the new generation with the necessary rescue skills.”

The two-day camp being organised at the Thane institute includes workshops, simulations, and hands-on demonstrations and training for rescue and relief operations. As part of the workshop Thursday, faculty from Aniruddha’s Academy informed the students about safety measures, treatment protocols, and rescue procedures during wartime.

Former director general of police Praveen Dixit also conducted an online workshop on civil defence for ITI students across the state.
