Mumbai, Aug 1 (PTI) The Maharashtra government has constituted an expert committee to conduct a performance audit of the state’s 1971 slum redevelopment law and recommend measures to expedite long-delayed SRA projects.
The committee, headed by the Additional Chief Secretary (Housing), will submit its recommendations within 10 months, stated a Government Resolution (GR) issued on Friday.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) will serve as member secretary of the committee.
Besides senior officials from the Housing and Urban Development departments, representatives of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Pune Municipal Corporation and architects’ bodies, the panel includes BJP MLA Parag Alvani and Shiv Sena leader Rahul Shewale as political representatives.
The government said the committee was constituted in compliance with the Bombay High Court’s directions issued on May 8, 2026, in a suo motu writ petition concerning the implementation of the Maharashtra Slum Areas (Improvement, Clearance and Redevelopment) Act, 1971, which governs the SRA.
The High Court had observed that stakeholders, including developers, landowners, cooperative housing societies and legal experts, had raised concerns about its implementation, and directed the constitution of an expert committee to undertake a performance audit. PTI ND KRK ARU
