Sambhal (UP), Jun 10 (PTI) Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal Ziaur Rahman Barq on Wednesday said that remaining in the prime minister’s chair for a long period cannot by itself be considered an achievement, and the real measure of a government’s success is the work done for public welfare.

Reacting to questions about Narendra Modi crossing the record of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure as an elected PM, Barq said, “I congratulate him for completing 12 continuous years as prime minister, but staying on the PM’s chair for a long time is not an achievement.” “Achievement is what you do for the people and what facilities your government provides to them while you are in office,” he said.

The Sambhal MP claimed that people were currently facing problems such as inflation, unemployment and corruption.

“Today, people are struggling with inflation, unemployment is increasing continuously and there is no control over corruption. If the government works in the interest of people, controls these issues and provides employment, that would be a real achievement,” he said.

On BJP leaders describing Modi’s long tenure as an achievement, Barq said, “I am also saying that he has created a record by surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s record, but creating a record is not the only achievement.” He added that the performance of a government should be judged by its contribution towards public welfare and the country’s development.

Modi on Wednesday became the longest continuously serving elected prime minister of India, breaking the record of first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

On May 26, 2014, Modi took charge as India’s prime minister with a landslide victory. He got re-elected with a bigger mandate in 2019 and his second term began on May 30 of the same year. His third consecutive term started on June 9, 2024. PTI COR KIS NB NB
